Station 6 – Troubleshooting Twist Issues

Diagnose poor or inconsistent twisting by checking gripper pressure, up-stroke movement, O-ring clearance and overall station travel.

Training Video

Watch the complete Station 6 troubleshooting procedure before following the detailed checks below.

Overview

This procedure explains how to troubleshoot poor or inconsistent twisting at Station 6.

The video demonstrates a common failure where the grippers do not apply enough pressure. Instead of being held securely while the twisting mechanism rotates, the pre-roll spins inside the grippers and little or no twist is produced.

Main areas to inspect:

  1. Gripper pressure
  2. Up-stroke position

The objective is to hold the pre-roll securely enough to create the twist while still allowing enough vertical movement to relieve tension on the paper.

Recommended Troubleshooting Order

When Station 6 produces a poor twist, check the problem in this order:

Pre-Roll Spinning → Gripper Pressure → Twist Result → Up-Stroke → O-Ring Clearance → Lower Travel Clearance

Start with the grippers because insufficient holding pressure can prevent the twist from forming at all.

Only move to the up-stroke adjustment once the pre-roll is being held correctly.

STEP 1

Check Whether the Pre-Roll Spins in the Grippers

Start by observing the pre-roll during a twisting cycle.

The pre-roll itself should remain securely held while the twisting mechanism performs its rotation.

If the grippers are too loose, the pre-roll will begin to spin inside the grippers instead of allowing the top paper to twist.

Typical symptom: If the pre-roll spins during the cycle and little or no twist is created, gripper pressure is the first adjustment to check.
STEP 2

Adjust the Gripper Pressure

Use the mechanical gripper adjustment to increase the holding pressure.

The objective is not to make the grippers as tight as possible.

They need enough pressure to prevent the pre-roll from rotating inside the grippers, but not so much pressure that the paper or pre-roll becomes deformed.

Make a small adjustment, then test the station again.

STEP 3

Lock the Gripper Adjustment

Once the desired gripper pressure has been established, lock the mechanical adjustment securely in place.

Run another trial using the same pre-roll if appropriate.

In the video, correcting the gripper pressure results in a proper twist without tearing or ripping the paper.

Target: The correct setting should provide enough grip for twisting while keeping the pre-roll intact.
STEP 4

Inspect the Finished Twist

After correcting the gripper pressure, inspect the top of the finished pre-roll.

If the twist is being created correctly but there is still excessive paper remaining at the top, inspect the up-stroke adjustment.

The up-stroke affects how the twisting assembly moves vertically as the paper becomes tighter.

STEP 5

Understand the Purpose of the Up-Stroke

As the paper twists, it becomes progressively tighter.

If the twisting mechanism remains at a completely fixed height, this tightening can create excessive tension on the paper.

The up-stroke allows the mechanism to rise slightly during twisting.

This movement provides a small amount of cushion or stress relief, reducing the pulling force on the top of the pre-roll.

Without enough relief, the paper can rip or tear during the twisting process.

STEP 6

Adjust the Up-Stroke

Adjust the up-stroke when additional movement is required to relieve tension during twisting.

Make small changes and perform another test after each adjustment.

The objective is to provide enough upward movement to protect the paper without moving the twisting assembly outside its safe operating range.

STEP 7

Avoid Contact With the O-Rings

When increasing the up-stroke, carefully inspect the upper travel of the twisting assembly.

⚠ O-Ring Clearance

Do not raise the mechanism so high that the rotating components contact the O-rings.

Excessive upward adjustment can cause the spinning assembly to contact and damage the O-rings.

This is an important mechanical limit to verify after adjusting the stroke.

STEP 8

Do Not Set the Stroke Too Low

The opposite condition can also create problems.

If the twisting assembly is positioned too low, it can interfere with other parts of the station and prevent the grippers from closing correctly.

Paper Tension Relief → Proper Gripper Operation → No Mechanical Interference

Check both the upper and lower travel after making a stroke adjustment.

STEP 9

Run Another Test Cycle

After adjusting the gripper pressure or up-stroke, run another controlled twisting cycle.

Watch the pre-roll throughout the complete movement.

  • The pre-roll remains stationary inside the grippers.
  • The grippers do not deform the pre-roll.
  • The top paper twists consistently.
  • The mechanism rises enough to relieve tension.
  • The paper does not tear.
  • The rotating assembly does not contact the O-rings.
  • The grippers can open and close normally.
Troubleshooting rule: Only change one adjustment at a time so the effect of each change can be clearly evaluated.
STEP 10

Optional New Twisting Station Upgrade

The video also discusses the newer twisting station used on the V6.

According to the discussion, the newer design eliminates several of the mechanical adjustments used on this Station 6 configuration and also eliminates the O-rings by using metal grippers.

The video states that this newer twisting station can be installed on V4 and V5 machines.

Note: This is presented as an optional upgrade rather than part of the standard Station 6 troubleshooting procedure.

Final Verification

Before considering the twisting issue resolved, verify that:

  • The pre-roll does not spin inside the grippers.
  • Gripper pressure is sufficient without deforming the pre-roll.
  • The gripper adjustment is securely locked.
  • The top paper forms a consistent twist.
  • The up-stroke provides enough movement to relieve paper tension.
  • The paper does not tear or rip during twisting.
  • The rotating assembly does not contact the O-rings.
  • The mechanism does not travel too low and interfere with gripper operation.
Target result: Run several consecutive pre-rolls after the adjustment. The goal is to achieve a consistent twist with enough gripping pressure to prevent slipping and enough up-stroke movement to protect the paper from excessive tension.
